Gypsum is formed by sedimentary deposition processes. To use gypsum as a building material, the crushed and ground gypsum is dried in a kiln. Depending on the temperature of the kiln, different building gypsums with different properties are produced. The fired gypsum is used as a dry, powdered product, for example, as a binder in plaster or screed. Before processing, these dry products are mixed again with water.

Gypsum, plaster and gypsum screed, and gypsum plasterboard consist essentially of building gypsum (binder) and sand.

Gypsum is also added to cement and acts as a setting retarder when the concrete hardens.

Toni Technik offers a comprehensive range of solutions in the field of binder testing for the building materials industry as well as for the R&D sector. Our ToniZEM can be used to test compressive strength, which in most cases is below 100 kN. Setting time can be determined according to EN 13279-2 or ASTM C 472 with our automatic Vicat instruments.
